Day 48 – More Frustration

With delayed muscle soreness in full effect, I was somewhat glad of a chest+arms day in the gym.

Day: 48 of 77
Date: 28/06/2013
Workout Day: 32
Weight (lb): 160.0 (11.8 lb loss)
Body Fat %: 13.5 (3.1% loss)
Health: Fine 10/10 (except arse friction burn, and DOMS in glutes)

As predicted, the DOMS from my leg day is in full effect. My glutes are constantly aching, but thankfully my quads are fine which means I can still function fine. Today’s gym session is split into two supersets. The first is three types of chest exercises, the second is three bicep exercises followed immediately by three tricep exercises. So the arm superset is actually six exercises back to back. As with the leg workout, I actually didn’t enjoy the programming. Each of the exercises is only 6 reps, and with a 10 second rest interval between exercises, there’s a LOT of rushing around, moving from one exercise to another and moving the bench around. I found it very fiddly, with little time to really focus on the muscle tension with an established mind-muscle connection. The pump is good, and it creates a good level of volume for each muscle group, but I just feel there’s too much going on. In turn it felt like a hard session but didn’t feel like it really achieved much. Disappointing really.

Later on I decided to go back in the gym and did some HIIT on the cross-trainer. It was a very hard session but made me feel good and gave me some satisfaction of having accomplished something for the day. My frustration with the resistance training has left me wondering how to improve it next time. Should I rehearse the switching between exercises more? Should I change the programme to more similar movements, e.g. three types of barbell bench presses? We’ll see. I am contemplating doing more twice-a-day training. Not in the traditional sense, but some cardio every weights day, and cardio + abs on rest days. I think I do need to do being more exercise generally to keep the fat loss on track.
