Day 34 – CNS WTF

For those that didn’t read my post of Day 33, yesterday I decided to spend the day resting in anticipation of another hard back+shoulders session today. It was the right decision.

Day: 34 of 77
Date: 14/06/2013
Workout Day: 24
Weight (lb): 164.2 (7.6 lb loss)
Body Fat %: 14.6 (2.0% loss)
Health: Fine. Back fixed. DOMS gone. 10/10

Today’s gym session was as predicted for this microcycle: intense, manageable and perversely enjoyable. By the end the adrenalin is really flowing and I’m filled with satisfaction for completing another session. I was particularly pleased with the rack deadlifts which went swimmingly. I went up 5kg and felt no twinges from my back, having hurt it previously when deadlifting four days ago. After virtually inhaling a protein shake I felt a little tired but otherwise normal.

And then it begins……

After about an hour my tiredness began to increase, and whilst not feeling sleepy, I became thoroughly exhausted. It was like someone had sucked all the energy from my body and filled my arms with lead. This has continued all day, but thankfully has not affected me mentally so I can still work fine. Essentially my CNS (Central Nervous System) is in a state of shock and asking what the F%$& is going on. All I can tell it is that it had better man up and recover from this because in 48 hours I’ve got Leg day and I’m not planning to get injured again. Of course my muscles are also sore from the session, but that’s a secondary concern to my sense of feeling like my bone marrow has been sucked out. The devil on my shoulder is currently advising me that a bowl of carbs will somehow fix this. He’s probably right but I’ll be sticking to my meat+veg for the foreseeable thank you very much.

Supposedly, with rest the CNS reacts to this stress by becoming more efficient at performing exercises, i.e. you become stronger, and with the volume should come some hypertrophy. I do hope so, as my body is currently asking me not to do this to it again. It’s out of luck I’m afraid, for another 43 days anyway.
